Nathaniel Hawthorne
(1804-1864)

He was born in Salem, Massachusetts 1804. He was a descendant  of John Hawthorne, who was a judge during the Salem Witch Trials. His father, Nathaniel Hawthorne, died when he was only four years of age and his mother, Elizabeth Clarke Manning Hawthorne, died years later after living in constant seclusion. He burned his first novel after it was rejected, but still continued to write.
